the one from cgd on the way to dfw
i am uploading craps-loads of photos from cdg as i compose this post. i have so much to go over.
i did some little video entries from out and about but i need to figure out how to post those to share since smugmug is just a photo gallery and i don't necessarily want to share the videos with the general world, you know?
firstly, apologies for my hair in the pictures. france and my hair had an ongoing argument since the day i landed. secondly, holy BALLS! my feet and legs are killing me. but more on that later.
lastly, the quality of the photos has diminished compliments of a VERY drunk englishman who dumped a large, new, pint of beer all over me and my camera. *sigh*
we left chantilly on friday around 2:30pm local time. we made it to paris in about an hour or so (traffic!) and 90EUR later. did you know that taxis begin charging you from the time they leave to come get you? so no matter where they are, they start charging long before you are even collected. again, BALLS!
friday:
we headed out for a walk-about and wound up at notre dame. oh my gosh, it was incredible. i mean, sure, you see pictures and shows on the television but until stand in front of it and feel how just absolutely massive it is, i'm not sure you can actually appreciate the extreme size.
we had dinner at a quaint cafe directly across the river from the notre dame so we had a spectacular view for our first dinner in paris.
after dinner we headed to meat with some other colleagues from texas. the plan was to meet at the eiffel tower at 8pm. we had some trouble navigating the metro but after help from a super amazingly nice frenchman, we arrived at just 10 after 8 and found our friends. completely shocking considering the sheer number of folks out there.
eiffel tower. wow. it's massive. absolutely.massive. we got there shy of dark and got to see how it does this light show thing. at the top of every hour, for ten minutes, they do this amazing light show thing. i have a video of that to share soon once i figure that part out.
many hours later we found we needed to head back to the hotel. that was a nightmare in and of itself and i'd rather not get myself agitated rehashing it. suffice it to say that it is OK to stop and ask for directions!
saturday i went it alone thru paris. (much better this way!) i headed for the louvre (pronounced loov-ruh by the way). i walked a long way and took tons and tons of photos. i saw so many really amazing things in the louvre. from there, i went to musee d'orsay (which is basically where the louvre ends in collections). i headed back to the hotel to empty off the digital camera card (whoopsie! picture happy was i!). i went back toward the louvre and entered from a different direction and got some really neat snaps as well. i saw so many things in this area and i'm just drawing a blank.
i window shopped a bit along random streets and took side streets here and there then went to bercy. what a cool little village. from bercy i went back to the hotel to drop off purchases and met up with a colleague and had dinner at a super neat little cafe at the end of our street. very nice and the owner lady was so funny.
from there, we walked to the sacre couer. (sac-ruh kerr). the steps getting up to it, OOF, but so totally worth it. you have the most amazing view of paris. it was a little hazy and overcast so we were a little disappointed in that plus it was almost dark ... pictures were only so-so with the digital. i am hoping the ones from the 35mm turned out much better.
after an hour or more up top, we headed and "shopped" the little vendors shops in the area.
hotel and then a beer across the street. a very interesting dutchman owned the place and he has strong views about texas and george w. LOL it was comical, actually, more on that later.
sunday. oh.my.god. sunday was something but i'll save that for another post since i think we will soon be boarding.
business class dontcha know. woot!
check out the photos, i've probably uploaded almost 100MB this morning from the airport. excuse the blurry or etc, i didn't go thru and sift out anything other than the obviously awful ones. i'll rotate and orient the ones that are sideways when i get home and have more time.
love from paris, for the last time.

the one from the eiffel tower
lunch was awesome.
Err dinner, i mean.
we saw some interesting people! one man in hot pink wind shorts and a wife beater, touring! at the notre dame. interesting.
off for now, much love!

the one from notre dame
we didn't go into notre dame because the queue was too long but i have probably fifty snaps of the area and some small video.
I won't be able to upload pictures for a bit since most internet access is about eight euro per minute. Yes! eight euro per MINUTE!
Sltr-btr, apologies about earlier, my laptop pooped and it won't boot.

the one from day 3 of training ...
i need to make a point to locate him tomorrow and ask him to share those with me. something funny though ... they were so offended at how raw it was, as a joke they called the waiter over and asked to send it back because they really wanted "rare". the waiter apparently didn't get the joke. lost in translation i suppose.
tonight i didn't venture over to the castle for dinner. instead i walked into the little town of chantilly. now, for those of you who are movie folks ... i will tell you that the racetrack and castle from the james bond movie (i believe i was told it's "diamonds are forever" or something similar) was filmed at the chantilly castle and the race track straight down from it.
also, i will tell you that "chantilly" it is pronounced "shaun-te-yee".
i went to a small irish pub (i know, i know!) and had a pint with my new mates. (oooh, i'm so european with my slang!) :) i ordered a "burger' de maison" or something similar and had a colleague help me to order it "well done" but we even asked it in french. "bien cuit". yeah, well apparently well done here is medium-rare to just rare in the states. GAH!
i will, however, tell you that their mayonnaise is FAR better than american mayo. so good, in fact, that i have plans to purchase a jar to bring home.
i walked around the town square hoping to find a place to buy batteries for my 35mm camera. (another french lesson is that batteries is pronounced "peel" ... yup.
OH and "bonne nuit" is more polite way to say goodnight.
OH and i played this game last night called "petanque'" last night. SUPER fun game. (pronounced "puh-tonk") i had a good time and it was fun to socialized with so many other nationalities. too bad the girl, linda, was completely knockered, pissed, hordie ... or as we americans like to say "lit".
training is going good although i am exhausted.
i posted only a few more photos, 17, i think. sorry, it got dark fast. i will try tomorrow. go take a looksy at the link. the upclose of the sign is done because i thought it was hilarious that the sign had "dorking" on it since i use it was an interchangeable word for "effing" something up. :) and the other upclose one is wisteria. notice how it is growing up the line pole.
one last thing. i've learned today that "double dip" means something TOTALLY different to folks from this side of the pond as opposed to we americans. for us, it's when you dip into a sauce, take a bit from your chip or whatever and then dip back into the sauce after your mouth, spit and germs have invaded the dipping mechanism.
over here? let's just say it has something to do with shagging. *ahem*
anyhow.
avec amour de paris,

the one with the disgusting dinner, and more
so.
last night's dinner. my.god.
the starter course was fondue over roasted bell peppers and onions (more like stewed though) seasoned with parsely and dill and served with ... you ready for this? ... scrambled eggs. now, if this wasn't a blog i've shared with some many, i would have an expletive in front of the "scrambled eggs".
who serves scrambled egg fondue?! seriously.
next course was a "beef tenderloin, with potatoes and tomato". the slab of cow on my plate (and please remember my aversion to cow as it is) has only been cemented further. it was raw. okay, well maybe not RAW but it wasn't cooked beyond super rare. i sent it back and asked for the vegetarian meal. the potatoes were okay, although weird.
the next course was brie. oh.god. what is WRONG with you people !? no wonder they drink bottles of wine at dinner .... it's so they can wash out the disgusting flavor of foods they eat.
then dessert (that i couldn't have) and espresso.
...
i'll let you know what's for dinner later on tonight. i'm equally curious. i skipped breakfast and lunch was .. well .. yeah.
the one good thing i can say is that it's open bar for beer and wine. at least i'm getting calories and carbs. hahahahaha
have to run, i have more topics but we'll discuss late.
xoxo from chantilly.

the one at the end of day two
ohhh, how very british sounding of me. HAHAHAHAHA
anyhow. today's training was far better than yesterday in that the concepts and workshops seemed far more tangible than yesterday. that is a good thing. i also feel as though our team has become a bit more cohesive. we have a long way to go and being the lone american on the team, puts me at a disadvantage because how i related services/tasks/processes is different than how those from this side do. it's a challenge that i'm struggling to manage.
the other thing i'm having a challenge with is the ground. they don't have paved walkways or etc. it's all this white rock type thing, almost like caliche back home. wearing a suit, with heels ... yeah, well you can only imagine how so not cool that is. take that into account with the "hairline fracture" in my left leg ....
the food is not better yet, so i have essentially subsisted on disgusting bread and coffee. the "fresh fruit" here is what we, americans, would describe as overly ripe or near time to toss in the garbage. the bananas, for example, are full on "hey, we better make banana bread in the next hour before this is a health concern" type ripe.
the coffee is different too. they have these machine things, similar to our flavia machines, that allow you to make espresso, half coffees or full coffees. the weird thing is that the coffee is really really really thick and foamy. i haven't quite figured out how it's so damn thick and still foamy.
here are some observations from today thus far:
** europeans, in general, are far too excitable about soccer
** europeans, in general, are far less excitable about dental care
** europeans, specifically men, have a misconceived notion that short pants and mandals (man-sandals) are good fashion choices
** europeans, specifically men, wear RED trousers. like american flag red. and not at halloween
** europeans, specifically men, were dark socks, boat shoes and shorts while "casual"
** french food, thus far, has a lot of vinegar
** the french weather is humid, much like the gulf coast, and is impolite to my hair
** the dutch believe that it is "cool" to be a nerd in america (i've since informed them this is not necessarily the case)
** europeans believe texans all drive large vehicles
** europeans believe that a 3000 sq foot home is a mansion.
** brits are paying about $8 USD per gallon for gasoline!
** the european tax system is enough to cause an american to stroke out trying to understand it
** european women, as a rule of thumb, don't really wear makeup
that's all for now. i have learned that i can make unlimited calls to the u.s. so i should consider one of those "phone your blog in" things since that could be fun but that require energy and effort.
well off to rest a bit and then dress for an "optional mandatory" gathering this evening. i know, i don't get it either. how can something be optional mandatory?
with love from paris!

the one with the chat log
mister says (12:14 AM):
call up room service!!!
jsg says (12:14 AM):
no such thing
dude, we don't even have wash cloths in the room
mister says (12:14 AM):
hmmm i wonder if the maids wear those cute little french maid outfits?!
jsg says (12:14 AM):
LOL
MARCIBOY!
mister says (12:15 AM):
LOL
did I type that, doh!
he's such a guy.
the one at the end of day one
today was interesting. and i can't even say i think it was entirely all "good" interesting. it was a lot of general chaos at the beginning and i gather our facilitators haven't really facilitated this discussion previously. perhaps once or twice but this isn't something they've done often, i think.
we were broken out into smaller groups and will work the case study, as a group, the rest of the week. this will be a huge challenge.
i didn't get to have dinner tonight because when i went over there at 8:15ish, there were no seats available. i popped in at 8:45 and still no seats. my colleague and i emailed around 9:15 and so i went over to the chateau to eat and everyone was still in there, done eating, and the wait-staff was cleaning. dinner is to go until 10pm but ... yeah.
so. guess i go hungry tonight. teaches me to bitch about the sugar and cheese, eh? :)
i took more pictures and posted. have a looky look.
tomorrow is going to be super hectic since we start the initial case study work, so off to bed i go. it's 10:45 here and only 3:45pm back home. i am super tired though.
much love from this side of the world.
xoxo
the one with pictures
this is where i'll post all the pictures so check back often. i will update as often as i can. pictures are still uploading as i type so ... yeah, there will be a few.

the one with the cabbie
our cabbie is scaring the crap out of me!
that is all.
Sent via BlackBerry from T-Mobile
the one from charles de gaulle
i sit, most uncomfortably, in the airport "lounge" at cdg while i wait for my colleagues to arrive from their respective countries. the cab ride out to the university is SO expensive that it makes sense for use to cab-share as much as we can.
i have about 20 minutes or so until i know of one flight to arrive, for certain.
the layover at lhr was boring. the airport is crap and the seating is a joke. they make no attempt to communicate with the travelers to let you know if your flight is late, early or even boarding! i was really disappointed in that.
let me go back and tell you a little about the "big" flight over though.
american airlines has adequately helped convince me of why so many americans are obese. holy balls! they feed you and feed you and water/liquid you non-stop. i had a salmon steak, rice, weird vegetables and bread for dinner right when we got on the plane ... following a beverage service. then immediately following dinner, another beverage service. a bit later, snacks and beverages and then just before landing they came thru with a "breakfast" snack but was larger than any breakfast i typically eat. good grief.
i sat i coach headed over here and i will tell you that i plan to do my best to upgrade to business on the way back. ugh. i think it wouldn't have been so bad had i been able to not be in the last row of a section so that i couldn't recline fully. maybe. i don't know. take that into account with the LARGE man that occupied the seat to my left ... yeah.
i did get to watch "holiday". what a cute movie.
i digress.
the flight from lhr to cdg was mostly uneventful. i had the fortune of sitting next to two polite british businessmen. i had the misfortune of sitting behind a woman who clearly did not believe in the use of body deodorant.
WHAT IS UP WITH THAT!? how can you even stand to SMELL yourself all damn day like that? it was absolutely disgusting. plain and simple. all the folks around us started coughing and gagging a bit when she boarded. man oh man.
so far i've been unable to take pictures but that should change shortly once we get on the way out to les-fontaines.
did you know that british airways only allows for you to have ONE carry on bag, total. yeah, i didn't know that and had to cram all of my photo stuff in my briefcase and all that crap around while i checked the camera bag. i am so not happy about that. at least on the way home it's a direct flight.
so pictures will be available this evening at some point.
okay, battery is low and the flight should arrive shortly.
xoxo from paris.
the one from london heathrow
o.m.g. what is up with the faux turtleneck things!? they remind me of leg warmers wrapped around the neck. i just don't get it.
"fashion" is interesting here, that's for dang sure!

better update from a hotspot in the airport once we deplane.

The one where they board
Soooooo many babies.
Hope they brought benadryl!
Sent via BlackBerry from T-Mobile
the one where she's in chicago
we should board soon. i think boarding starts around 9:05pm. our big ass plane hasn't arrived just yet but i suspect it won't be too much longer before it arrives.
i wish i wasn't such a chicken and would take photos of the airport etc to post but there are *so* many folks about that i just think it would draw FAR too much attention to me by doing so. and if you haven't caught on by now, i don't like to draw attention to myself.
thank you. no.
this is going to be one of the longest days ever.
the good news is that i'll have a power port under my seat so i can blog across the pond and then post once i hit london. i'll take pictures inside the plane as best i can (maybe less noticeable if i don't use a flash?).
too many folks getting drunk before we're even on the flight. should make for interesting flight. gah.
more later.
